The cows' diet is pasture based, utilizing rotational grazing.  The Jerseys are fed grain at milking time.  The are milked twice a day.  During winter when grass is in short supply, they are fed hay (millet, orchard grass, alfalfa, or mixed grass) which we raise.  They also receive a loose free choice mineral.  

 

We breed our Jersey cows to calve every 15 months to 2 years.  We do not push them to calve every year since we are not a commercial dairy farm.

 

Our cows are not given any hormones to increase milk production.  We do treat them with antibiotics when they are sick, but this milk is dumped and is not used in making soap or for our personal consumption.
