Pasture Raised Beef

No Added Hormones or growth promoting antibiotics

We sale beef by the cut, price per the pound. This is similar to how grocery stores sale their beef.   Our beef is vacuum sealed and frozen by a USDA processor. This helps maintain the fresh flavor.

Our feeder steers (male cows raised for meat) are pasture raised with grain for finishing.  This means we have the main portion of their diet as grass. The grain is fed in small amounts (less the 2% body wieght) to increase marbling of the meat and enhance flavor.  We mix our own feed during the finishing stages.  This feed is made up of corn from local farmers, alfalfa that is grown by poplar springs farm, soybean meal, and minerals.

We do NOT use added growth hormones.  Hormones do assist in weight gain, however a lot of that weight is water.  Therefore, we believe sustainable beef farmers should focus on genetics for faster growth and better marbling, instead of relying on synthetic hormones.

All of our cows (mamas, bulls, beef, dairy, etc) have access to free choice pasture  with hay during the winter when grass in dormant.

Beef Steers/Heifers (Hereford/Angus)

The steers/heifers raised on Poplar Springs Farm are Hereford cattle. They are used when needed for Oak Grove Farm Beef, but usually are used for Poplar Springs direct beef sales.  When they are babies they only eat from the mama cows that are grass fed, and from the pasture.  When it is almost time for weaning they start introducing grain.  After weaning they remain on pasture where they have access to grass at all times, while they are also being fed some grain on the side.  As the animal grows and gets closer to finishing, the amount of grain fed will gradually increase.  However, grass always remains the main source of nutrition.
